Polarized vs Merged 3bet Ranges

This article will discuss the concept of polarized vs merged hand ranges in 3bet pots.

As you should know, whenever you decide to bet in poker, you do so for a specific reason, otherwise you will get lost in the hand because there was no forward planning. 3betting preflop strategies in cash games is no different, you need to have a plan for your 3bet to be deceptive in your play and to maximize value.

The two main reasons for 3betting is doing it for value or as a bluff. Generally, you want to be 3betting a value range of hands where the plan is to get stacks in the middle when your opponent does 4bet. Typically a 3bet value range includes a polarized range of something like QQ+/AK.

Whenever you look down at your two hole cards and your eyes light up when you have a big pocket pair or big slick, the objective is to get stacks in the middle, because in all likelihood you have the best hand and you want to be in a heads-up situation if at all possible.

A question of debate is whether you should have a polarized 3bet range of strong and weak hands? It may be the best way to play while you are inexperienced and don’t have great post flop skills, but its not the most optimal play if you want to increase your win rate against certain players.

The main consideration when deciding what hands we should value bet when 3betting is determining with a great deal of accuracy what hands your opponent will call with, and this can largely depend on their position at the table. Most players understand the concept of position and will be more willing to play back at you if they have position in the hand. This concept is actually very relevant for any polarized vs merged betting situation, not just in 3bet pots.

If you know your opponent is the typical live loose cannon who is not respecting when you are 3betting and will call with stuff like JT or QT suited, then you would want to widen your 3betting value range to include stuff like KQs, KQo, QJs, AJo, AJs, etc. These are hands you can consider 3betting with, especially when out of position and you can expect your opponent to call the 3bet with worse.

When you start 3betting with additional hands your 3betting range in your opponent’s eyes will begin to get merged, if they are paying any attention. Not only are you 3betting with strong and weak hands, but also medium strength hands. It can be better to have a merged 3betting range vs loose players who are always calling your 3bets, because you will have less bluffs in your range, which is ideal situation because they will be calling down light, and you want to have a better hand when they do.

You also want to include bluffs in your 3betting range. Betting a polarized range and including occasional bluffs is an optimal strategy vs tight players who are respecting when you 3bet. The plan when you are 3betting as a bluff is to win the dead money preflop when you can expect the player who open raises to fold, so it doesn’t matter what two cards you are re-raising.

I hope this article gave you some more insight into what is a polarized and merged 3bet range, and what prelfop strategy is optimal depending on the player.
