Online Poker Table Selection
Selecting a good table is usually a relatively straightforward task, but when it comes to online poker its also very important. Why? Because your skill level is only important in relation to the other players. No matter how good you are, you will still lose if all the other players at the table are better than you. And even if you are bad, you will still earn money if the other players are a lot worse. Online poker table selection will gurantee that you are playing with bad players.
You should look for the tables with a lot of bad players, otherwise known as the fish. You can move tables playing live, but obviously its much easier to do online. In fact, the majority of online poker sites will display in-depth table statistics for ring game tables to help you with this. Full Tilt Poker for instance, show you how many percent of the players see the flop each round on average. If that number is very high, like fifty percent or so, you will know that the players play too many starting hands even before you sit down. It also displays the average pot size, and if that number is very high in relation to the blinds, you will know that the players play aggressively post flop as well. When games tend to be loose/aggressive in nature, it can be very profitable because you will notice that a lot of the players are willing to gamble more.
When you sat down at the table you should soon be able to spot other players style and tendencies. Observe how your opponent’s play even when you are not involved in a hand. Do people call with hands like K3s in the blinds? Are they always defending their big blind? Did someone call down to the river with bottom pair? Are the players tight nitty and you can’t see that your opponents playing in a bloated pot unless they have close to the nuts? Then you should probably move table and find a juicer game. Good online poker table selection allows you to seek out those who are weaker than you, because you cant lose against them in the long run.
Most online poker rooms will permit its players to color tag opponents at the table, so if you happen to spot a fish at the table, you can place a player note or color code the player so next time you play with them in a game you will know they are a bad player.
If you seem to be a marginally winning or even break even player, one of your problems may be that you are not doing a good job of online poker table selection. Like was said previously in this article, you want to be playing against bad players. Good players make fewer mistakes and you make money in poker from other players mistakes, so obviously you want to play better then your competition.
