Making Money With Online Poker

Contrary to popular belief its very possible to play poker for a living and to make money with poker. The attitude taken by recreational players is to have a bit of fun as they are playing for entertainment purposes. Unlike recreational players, if you are looking to make money playing poker, then you need to treat it as a business and to play your best game consistently.

If you are serious about playing poker full time, the first thing which you will need is a sizeable bankroll. It should be obvious, without a bankroll to play poker with is a big hindrance, it stops you from playing poker, which is why following strict bankroll management principles is critical. Going on monkey tilt and losing your entire bankroll is allowing your emotions to get in the way and not treating poker as a business seriously. If you want to make money with poker, treat your poker bankroll as an investment and never touch it. And most importantly don’t play when you are tilting. It’s the easiest way to lose your bankroll because you are playing in less optimal conditions and not playing your normal game. Losing your bankroll will also mean you can’t play when the softer games come around. It may seem like I am carrying on about this particular issue too much, but believe me this is the fundamental concept of making money with online poker.

Next is learning a good technical game. You make money with poker by playing better then your opponents. Unlike casino games there is no house in poker, you are playing your opponents and the online poker site charges you rake. That’s how they make their money. So in order to make money you are required to beat the limits you are playing, and to achieve this means you are constantly improving your game so you are better then your opponents. If you are playing poker professionally this is a never ending cycle, you are always looking to improve your game so you can win more money, move up in limits, which will allow you to build a bigger bankroll and comfortably take care of your bills and real life expenses.

Playing online poker is the best way to learn the fundamentals of a solid technical game, because unlike live poker where you are more reliant on reading physical tells, with online poker the focus is more on the math and making the correct decisions which have a positive expected value. ie. You play with the intention of making money with online poker over the long run.

Everybody has a different way of learning. When it comes to improving your game, you should get yourself a few good poker books. First, you need to decide which poker game you want to specialize in, because most books specialise on a certain topic like MTT strategy, Sit and Go strategy, and cash game strategy. If you are just starting out, find a book which focuses on the math involved in making good decisions. The book “Small Stakes Hold ‘em: Winning Big With Expert Play” written by Ed Miller, David Sklansky, Mason Malmuth is very good for beginners to poker who are looking to make a bit of money on the side or even play professionally. This book does a good job of explaining important fundamental poker math concepts such as pot odds, implied odds, and playing in loose games, which is by far the most common situation you will find yourself in when playing at the casino. Online the games tend to be much tighter so its not as relevant, but the book is still very useful for explaining basic poker concepts.
