Aggressive Poker Strategy

In poker, playing aggressively is an important aspect of the game if you want to move past being a marginally winning player. You want players to think that you are always bullying them so they begin to play back at you, and eventually you will have the nuts and they will have wished they picked a better spot.

What does playing an aggressive poker style really mean? Poker aggression can be integrated into your game in a number of different ways, including blind stealing, bluffing, semi bluffing, betting with position when it’s checked to you and so on.

The best way to become more aggressive is to give the impression you are more aggressive then what you really are. For the most part this can be achieved preflop. For example, let’s say you know that there are tight players in the blinds who will never defend their blinds unless they have a premium hand, which won’t happen often. In this scenario, you would want to be always raising on the button (and even on the cutoff if the player to your left is also a tight player). If you are constantly raising in late position, you will give the false impression that you are a very aggressive player, and some weak players will misinterpret this information and assume that you also play very aggressively post flop, when in actual fact all you were doing was exploiting the weaknesses of the tight players in the blinds.

It’s important that you play with controlled aggression instead of playing recklessly. There should always be a reason why you are being aggressive in a certain spot. If you can be confident that your opponent will fold if you show strength then go ahead and run over your opponents, but be smart enough to turn down the aggressive poker strategy if players begin to play back at you. These constant adjustments need to be made all the time.

If there is a loose cannon at the table who is calling down light with bottom pair on a scary board, then avoid confrontations with this player and only bet or raise them for value. When it is executed correctly, an aggressive poker style can be immensely profitable when playing NL Hold’em. The constant pressure that you place on your opponents will eventually be telling, and it will force them into making mistakes and playing differently to what they would do normally.
